Early cancer detection is essential regardless of your age!
An annual check-up is advisable. The statutory health care plan of the public health insurance companies covers an important basic program which includes the following measures:
From the age of 20:
Blood-pressure check
Skin inspection
Inspection and pelvic exam
Inspection of the vagina and the cervix
Pap smear from the cervix
From the age of 30
Additional palpation exam of both breasts and
arm pits
From the age of 45
Additional recto-vaginal exam
From the age of 50
Additional stool examination for blood
From the age of 55
Coloscopy every 10 years
or stool examination for blood every 2 years
There is no 10.00 Euro practice fee for basic early cancer detection examinations!
However, as soon as you want or require further examination, e.g. for vaginal secretions, you either need to pay the practice fee of 10.00 Euro or bring a referral from another doctor visited during the same quarter.
Furthermore, there are a lot of additional advisable examinations that are not included in the scope of services covered by the basic early cancer detection examinations!
Ovarian cancer or carcinoma of the uterine cavity in the early stages cannot be detected during a pelvic exam. However, changes in these organs in the early stages can often be detected by an ultrasonic examination through the vagina.
