Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese healing method. Acupuncture needles are inserted into different parts of the body at various depths. Stimulating these specially selected sensitive acupuncture points loosens blockages within the organism or so-called meridional system (energy channels) and vitalizes/soothes individual organ systems.
Acupuncture has been used to successfully cure various illnesses for more than 2,000 years. As opposed to western medicine, Chinese medicine is based on a holistic approach to the human body. The self-healing powers of your body are strengthened, bodily energies once more flow consistently, and you are healthy. Interferences in the energy flow lead to illness. Acupuncture can regulate the energy flow.
Acupuncture stands for the treatment of certain points on the body with needles. When the right point is found, some patients feel a dull pain, throbbing pain, a thermic reaction or prickling. This is called the de Qi sensation. The acupuncture points can also be stimulated using heat, cupping glasses or finger pressure.
In the case of acute illnesses, daily acupuncture sessions can be carried out. In the case of chronic illnesses, treatments are usually carried out once or twice a week. Each session lasts 20 to 45 minutes. An acute illness generally requires 3-6 sessions, a chronic illness 12-20 sessions. A refreshment session at a later date might be necessary.
There are virtually no side effects. Occasionally patients encounter circulatory problems or a temporary worsening of the symptoms. A small bruise could also form. Since needles are only used once, there is no risk of infection.
Many health insurance companies cover the costs for acupuncture treatment as part of a special pilot programme: This programme is particularly geared towards patients suffering from migraines or chronic arthralgia.
In addition, the DAK covers the costs for acupuncture during pregnancy and for kicking the habit of smoking.
